A Prayer For UNITY

How good and pleasant it is when God's people live together in unity!

Psalm 133:1

Dear LORD, when Your people are living together in unity, You say that it’s a good and pleasant thing. It’s something that You bless and give life to.

You love it when Your children are unified.

But LORD, we have been divided, not only in our nation and world, but in Your Body…the Body of Christ. We have been fragmented and torn apart by our different beliefs about You and the world. We have put up walls that have kept us from having fellowship with one another. We have allowed offenses to come between us, causing separation and harm.

Before Jesus was arrested in John - chapter 17 (verses 21-23) He prayed,

“That all of them may be one, Father, just as You are in me and I am in You. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that You have sent me. I have given them the glory that You gave me, that they may be one as we are one. I in them and You in me, so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that You sent me and have loved them even as You have loved me.”

Dear LORD, we bring Your Body before You and ask for restoration so that the walls of disunity will be broken down. Please forgive us for allowing offenses to tear us apart.

Forgive us for not loving one another in a Christ-like way.

Forgive us for any hatred, gossip, and slander toward one another.

Forgive us for using negative words to tear one another down.

Forgive us for not loving our brothers and sisters who have been created in Your image, whom You love - from every tribe, language, people and nation.

Forgive us for focusing on non-essentials.

Forgive us for focusing more on the temporal things that will pass away,

rather than on the eternal things that will live on forever.

Forgive us for not demonstrating unity, which is in alignment with Your heart.

We want the world to know that You sent Jesus to save them from their sins.

We want the world to see unity demonstrated in us.

Colossians 3:12-14 says, 12. Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, & patience. 13. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

which binds them all together in PERFECT UNITY. (emphasis mine)

Dear LORD, we ask that we would be like-minded and have the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Please tear down the barriers that keep us from loving one another in a way that honors You. Please make us one, creating unity in us with You so that we will accomplish Your will and good purposes on the earth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

"In essentials, unity. In non-essentials, liberty. In all things, love."
