Living Hope

What is LIVING HOPE? We usually use the word "hope" in our language when we're not sure about something. We may say, “I don’t know what will happen, but I hope that it happens.” We have wishful thinking, as in “I wish” or “I hope.”

What I want to talk about, is what LIVING HOPE is, according to the Bible. The biblical definition of hope is confident expectation. It’s when life is unclear, but we have a firm assurance and hope in God.

In 1st Peter, chapter 1 - verses 3-4 (RSV), it says, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy we have been born anew to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and to an inheritance which is imperishable, undefiled and unfading, kept in heaven for you.”

We see here that when we have a new spiritual life, we get new hope. It’s a LIVING HOPE. It’s not some dead, perishing hope, but a hope that is living, lively, strong, durable, permanent and unfading.

Several years ago, my mother went home to be with the Lord. On the day that I cleaned out her apartment, I was traveling home with the last of her belongings. I was grieving and saddened by her loss in a profound way. As I reflected on her life and death, I looked out of the corner of my eye and saw the beautiful scene above, as I passed by the small pond. I pulled the van over and walked over and then took some photos with my phone. As I looked out over the pond, I felt peace at that moment. A peace that it was going to be okay and that because of LIVING HOPE, I would one day see my mom again in heaven.

God reminds us of His creativity and beauty in nature. Beholding a breathtaking scene, rainbow, sunset, or colorful garden, causes us to step back for a moment and declare that He is a mighty and brilliant artist. He reminds us that He is God and we are not. He is in control of the universe and is so incredibly powerful and big, and we are so, so small. Yet, as small as we are, He has created us, loves us and longs to give us His hope.

We are alive for a reason and a purpose. I pray that you will discover what your purpose is and what you have been created to do. When you have His LIVING HOPE, you will also experience true love, joy and peace. These treasures make life abundant and full.
